Fergal Crehan is the leading expert in the field of online privacy and freedom of expression issues, and those challenges which the increasing use of social media presents.
Fergal Crehan is a barrister who specialises in privacy, data protection and internet law, and has acted as counsel in major privacy cases at the European Court of Justice. He is also Managing Director at privacy consultants The Hit Team, who use legal and technical expertise to help people deal with issues of online infringements of their privacy, and fight back against leaked personal content and internet targeting.
He has spoken about the issue of social media and the law to the Law Reform Commission, the Oireachtas, and the National Union of Journalists. He also frequently contributes to broadcast media; he has written about privacy and technology, as well as more general legal and political issues, for several publications both in print and online, including The Irish Times, Daily Mail, and TheJournal.ie; and he has contributed to national radio stations Newstalk, Today FM, and RTE Radio One and Two, as well discussing legal and public interest topics on RTE and TV3 television.
He also gives talks and lectures on legal topics to organisations and companies, and has lectured in Media Law at the Irish Academy of Public Relations and in Data Protection Law at the Law Society, Blackhall Place.
Fergal graduated from NUI, Galway with a BA in English and Sociology & Politics in 1997, and was called to the bar in 2004.
