Chupi Sweetman-Durney has always had an interest in sparkly things and creating her own wearable items, and sold her first piece at the mere age of 17. With a nudge from her fiancé and a wish to create jewellery that can last through generations, Chupi started her own brand of delicate jewellery inspired by the beauty of natural and wild things.
Chupi Sweetman-Durney is an Irish designer, making delicate gold jewellery inspired by the beauty of natural and wild things.
Although she had always been the kid covered with glitter and glue making some new crazy things out of papier mache, Chupi never thought she would end up making beautiful sparkly jewellery as her job. She sold her very first piece at age 17 – vintage Levi’s turned into a gorgeous bag, lined with bright pink satin and adorned with a rose. She was hooked by the idea that something she had created made someone else happy. At 21, during her first year of college, Chupi was scouted by Topshop and became the youngest designer to ever work with them, causing her to go from scruffy student to serious designer overnight.
When Chupi’s fiancé suggested she needed a hobby in 2011, she found herself compelled to start making the jewellery she wanted to wear but could not find. A friend asked for a piece, a stylist loved a ring and suddenly she was a jeweller; the brand Chupi was founded in 2012, and is now a multi-award winning jewellery brand. Irresistibly drawn to “wild and natural things,” Chupi’s signature aesthetic is casting from real feathers and leaves, creating a delicate fine jewellery collection handcrafted with love in Ireland, loved by fans all over the world.
Living in a world where much of what we buy is disposable, Chupi wishes to create heritage and makes delicate jewellery for design driven, fashion conscious women seeking something authentic in a disposable culture. Chupi is currently stocked in key boutiques around Ireland and several high end department stores.
The last few years have been a sparkly whirlwind for Chupi, being featured at the London and New York Fashion Week, receiving amazing response from buyers as well as fantastic press coverage with celebrities from Marina & the Diamonds to Ruby Wax wearing and loving her work.
